The study was conducted from January to June 2017. Specifically, it aimed to prepare a demographic and socio-economic profile of the agricultural crop farmer- respondents, make an inventory of machineries, sources of power and facilities used in various agricultural operation and describe its technical specification, determine the mechanization index of the municipality, identify problems encountered in the practice of existing agricultural mechanization technology; and develop a sex disaggregated data in the participation of men and women to various farm operations.
The mechanization level in the production of agricultural crops such as corn, coffee, coconut, fruits, vegetables, legumes and root crops is generally low. Most of the operations are still heavily reliant to manual labor with just few operations are using farm machinery. The use of animal and mechanical power are typically present on land preparation. Other from that, machine is rarely used except for weeding.
The total number of draft animals in the municipality is 347 which is equivalent to 242.90 hp, while the total mechanical power available is 1120.20 hp. The mechanization index of Indang is about 2.075 hp/ha.
Problems such as limited resource of the farmers, small size of farms and reluctance to change farming activities are the big issues identified in mechanizing the agricultural sector. Male workers still dominate in various farm operation, while female workers engage to operations with lighter labor such as harvesting and cleaning.
