JIMENEZ, SHAROL F. April, 1998. "Preliminary study on Bacteriological
Analysis of Drinking Water". Undergraduate thesis, Bachelor of Science in Biology, Major in Microbiology, in coordination with Department of Biological Sciences, College of Arts and Sciences, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Dr. Yolanda A. Ilagan.
One hundred seven drinking water samples from selected towns of Cavite were studied qualitatively and quantitatively.
Highest percentage of occurrence (21.43 percent) of Escherichia coli was observed in the water sample from Dasmarinas while the lowest percentage (7.14 percent) was observed in the water sample from Amadeo. Both samples of water were obtained from faucets in which the source of water was a spring.
The number of bacteria in the water samples in different areas were compared. An average of 1.78 x 103 cfu/ml, 1.44 x 103 cfWml and 1.73 x 103 cfu/ml were observed in upland, lowland and industrial areas, respectively. Analysis showed no significant difference.
Bacterial counts in different water distribution system were also compared using samples taken from faucets of Indang and Amadeo. Results showed that there was no significant difference in the bacterial counts of drinking water sourced from steel pipes and in plastic.
Bacterial counts in different chlorinated water supplies of different localities were also compared. Results showed that there were differences in their bacterial counts.
Isolation and identification of different bacteria found in water was also included in the quantitative analysis. The genera Micrococcus, Staphylococcus, Planococcus, Bacillus,
C.orynebacterium, Kurthia, Renibacterium, Brochothrix, Pasteurella, Flavobacterium, Proteus, Edwardsiella, Alcaligenes, Pseudomonas, Escherichia, Providencia, Klebsiella,
Enterobacter, Citrobacter and Brevibacterium were isolated from water samples.
