Summary, etc. AGUILAR, JAYGIELYN S. and LIM, CATHALENE DOMINIQUE J. Ergonomic Assessment on the Intensity of Musculoskeletal Disorders among Dental Practitioners in Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2017. Adviser: Engineer Willie C. Buclatin.

The study was conducted to determine the prevalence and distribution of MSDs among dental practitioners and classify the MSDs in terms of age and gender. The personal attributes such as age, gender, weight, height, number of patients per day, and number of working hours per day were tested with the frequency and severity of the symptoms to identify the risk factors that contribute to the occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders to dental operations.

The participants of the study were eighty-five (85) male dental practitioners and one hundred forty one (141) female dental practitioners with age ranging from 28 to 60 years old and were residing in the different municipalities in Cavite. Common dental processes were involved in the study. Through Cornell Musculoskeletal Disorder Questionnaire, ergonomic risk factors in dental operations were then identified.

Personal attributes, job related attributes and frequency and severity of musculoskeletal disorders symptoms were also obtained. Somer's D technique was used for correlation analysis between variables such as bivariate analysis that describe the joint contribution of the variables in the study. Rapid Entire Body Assessment was utilized to determine the risk factors associated to work related musculoskeletal disorder triggered by the awkward working positions and poor work practices. xviii

The result of the study showed that majority of the dental practitioners said that the parts of the body that were considered to be significantly affected by musculoskeletal disorders which caused by ergonomic risk factors were the neck, right and left shoulders, upper and lower back, right wrist, and certain parts of the right hand such as the index, middle, ring, and thumb finger. it also showed that the respective affected human body parts for male dental practitioners were the neck, right and left shoulders, upper and lower back, left and right wrists, index, middle, and ring finger of both hands, pinkie finger of the right hand, thumb finger of the left hand and the upper and middle palm of the right hand, for the female dental practitioners, the affected human body parts were the neck, both shoulders, upper and lower back, both wrists, feet, all fingers of the right hand, thumb finger of left hand, and the upper palm and middle palm of the right hand.

Also, the correlation analysis showed that the all the body parts have a low correlation to age bracket in terms of how often do dentists feel pain on the certain body part. The body parts including the neck, right forearm, hips/buttocks, thigh, lower leg, foot, middle and lower palm of the right hand, index, middle, ring, and pinkie finger of the left hand, and also the lower palm of the left hand tell us that as the dentists grow old, the frequency of MSDS lessen for these parts. For the correlation analysis of MSDs and gender, all body parts have a low correlation to gender in terms of frequency of pain. The body parts including both shoulders, right wrists, and the index, middle, ring, and thumb finger of the right hand, and all the fingers of the left hand and the upper palm tell us that female dentists tend to feel pain in these parts less often than the male.
