Abstract: HALLARE, JAN ALLEDALE M. Factors Affecting the Teaching Strategies Utilized by The Instructors of the Department of Physical Sciences, Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics with specialization in Statistics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2015. Adviser: Dr. Renelyn R. Cordial. This study entitled "Factors Affecting the Teaching Strategies Utilized by The Instructors of the Department of Physical Sciences" was conducted at Cavite State University Main Campus from June 2014 to February 2015. The main purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting the teaching strategies utilized by the instructors of the Department of Physical Sciences. Specifically, it aimed to (1) describe the demo-socio-psychological characteristics of the instructors of Physical Science Department of Cavite State University; (2) identify the teaching strategies of the Physical Science Department instructors; (3) determine the factors associated with the teaching strategies; and (4) ascertain the problems encountered in the use of preferred teaching strategies. A descriptive-correlational method of research was used in the study. The data needed for this study were gathered by means of survey questionnaires. These were administered to the forty-eight faculty instructors of Physical Sciences Department of Cavite State University. Frequency count, mean and percentages were used to determine demo-socio-psychological characteristics, teaching strategy preferences and problems encountered in the use of preferred materials of the respondents. Spearman's Rank Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the factors affecting the teaching strategy preferences in terms of age, number of years in teaching, number of seminars attended, attitude towards teaching and attitude towards superiors of the respondents. Point Biserial Correlation was used to ascertain the factors affecting the teaching strategy preferences in terms of gender, civil status, subjects being taught, and field of specialization of the respondents. And Chi-square Test was used to determine the factors affecting the teaching strategy preferences in terms of the highest educational attainment of the respondents. Based on the results, generally, instructors teaching statistics subject had a significant relationship with innovative methods. Likewise, attitude towards teaching showed a significant relationship with using hardware and software. It means that in the field of statistics, innovative methods are affected by the subject. Hence, the instructors may have different preferences using the innovative methods in delivering their lessons and as they have a positive attitude towards teaching, they can also have a better result in teaching when using hardware and software. Finally, based upon the result of the study, it was recommended that future researchers should consider all the instructors in the university to make the study more conclusive and use other variables such as academic performance of the students. Comparison to other universities could be considered to assess the effectiveness of the preferred teaching strategies of the instructor.
