Abstract: DELAN, CHRISTIAN R. and SONATA, ALONICA MAE R. Bulgar, Umaabante Ngayon: Tabloidism in Philippine Print Media Headlines. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2017. Adviser. Ms. Racquel G. Agustin. The study was conducted during the school year 2016-2017. This study aimed to identify how the headlines of Bulgar, Abante and Pilipino Star Ngayon were written in terms of theme, tone, and language used. It also aimed to identify if the three tabloids used tabloidism in presenting the banner headlines. The research included the three common national tabloid newspapers Bulgar, Abante, and Pilipino Star Ngayon. Issues from January 2016 to October 2016 were collected and the banner headlines were analyzed to determine if tabloidism was present and used. It used content analysis, panicularly textual analysis using a coding guide that served as the framework of the analysis. Issues from January to October 2016 of the three tabloid newspapers, particularly banner headlines, were collected and analyzed. Based on the data gathered, Bulgar, Abante, and Pilipino Star Ngayon use tabloidism in presenting their banner headlines. In terms of theme, headlines of Bulgar were mostly written under political. Secondly, other theme which cannot be categorized; headlines with tragic topics, entertainment, scandal, economical, crime, headlines with the theme of outrageous behavior, sex-themed headlines, and disaster-themed. With the tone, Bulgar used mostly straight forward tone with its headlines. It was followed by satirical tone, light tone, interpretative and emotional tone. With the language, Bulgar used informal language in most of its headlines. It was followed by slang, colloquial language, and lastly is formal. Abante used political theme in most of its headlines. Second is economical theme, crime, other theme of headlines which cannot be categorized, scandal-focused headlines, outrageous behavior, and headlines with the theme of tragedy, disaster, literary and poetic devices, entertainment, and sex-themed headlines. In terms of tone, straight forward was mostly used on the presentation of the headlines of Abante. Interpretative tone, satirical, emotional, and light tone. Based on the language used, Abante had mostly used informal in most of its headlines. It is followed by formal language, slang, colloquial, and literary language. Pilipino Star Ngayon was the same with Bulgar and Abante. It also used political theme in most of its headlines. Secondly, other themes which cannot be categorized, crime tragedy, scandal, outrageous behavior, economical, disaster, and entertainment. With the tone, it was also the same with the two previous tabloids as it mostly used straight forward tone in the presentation of its headlines. It was followed by satirical, light, interpretative and emotional tone. Based on the language, Pilipino Star Ngayon used informal language in most of its headlines. It was followed by formal language, slang, colloquial, and literary language. Upon the analysis made, it can be concluded that tabloidism was present in the three tabloid newspapers.
