April 2002. Adviser: Mr. Oliver C. Fauni. A field study was conducted from November 13, 2001 to January 19, 2002, to expose the trainee to the production operation of the Farmtec Foods Incorporated (FF1) and at the same time apply the knowledge learned in classrooms. Specifically, it aimed to generate information on the activities of the production department of FFI; provide the student an opportunity to gain actual experience in preparation for future employment and identify the problems encountered by the firm and recommend feasible solutions to the identified problems. Information were obtained through personal interviews conducted with the company Quality Control Officer (QC), supervisors, and workers and also through observations. Due to the confidentiality of some records, the financial aspect was not given emphasis. The focus of the study was on the production department where the trainee was assigned. Farmtec Foods Inc. is engaged in making spices for food ingredients. It is consistently the model company in the food manufacturing sector for the past 13 years. The daily activities in the production department include sorting, slicing, drying, unloading, and pulverizing. Being a leader and pioneer of natural and exotic food ingredients and the foremost supplier of spices in the Philippines are considered as the firm’s major attraction to customers. The firm also provide services like tolling services for drying and pulverizing of local food processors and distributors; heat treatment services for local food processors; custom blending of ingredients and preparation of dry and liquid mixes; and toll packaging in consumer packs. Joining in trade fairs like Barakalan, Negopower, and sponsoring cooking demonstrations are some of the promotional strategies used by the company. The most common problem faced by the firm is the malfunctioning of electrical machines. To minimize this problem, the company should have weekly check-up of all the machines with help of the company maintenance personnel. The author's work assignments at the production department include, receiving, sorting, washing of raw materials and packing of finished products.
