Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agicultural Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2018. Adviser: Dr. Leyma L. Cero. A rice straw bale garden was established at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Los Baños, Laguna. The garden was installed with manual drip irrigation. Lettuces (curly leaf variety) were grown in the garden under different levels of moisture in three different media of growing, namely: rice straw bale, rice straw compost and soil. The established rice straw garden served as an alternative way to maximize the utilization of rice straw after harvesting of palay instead of treating it as waste. The rice straw garden was evaluated based on the growth performance of lettuce in terms of number of leaves, height of crop, color of leaves, width of leaves, weight of crop, and root length. The number of leaves of lettuce plants in rice straw bale under 60 — 80% level of moisture obtained the greatest mean. The highest mean crop height was observed under the soil with 40 — 60 % level of moisture. Likewise, for the width of the leaves the widest was obtained in soil under 80 —100 %. Rice straw compost under 60 — 80 % moisture produced the heaviest yield. Moreover, rice straw bale under 80 —100 % level of moisture produced the longest roots. In terms of depth of irrigation, rice straw bale under 80- 100 % was observed to have the highest depth of water applied.
