Abstract: KASAYSAYAN, MA. DARELA P. Teachers' Proficiency and Level of Achievement in Mathematics of Grades to VI Pupils in the District of Indang Il. M.A. Thesis. Master of Arts in Education major in Science Education. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2005. Adviser: Dr. Leonora A. Mojica. This study was conducted mainly to determine the relationship between the teachers' proficiency and the pupils' level of achievement in Mathematics. Specifically, it aimed to: 1) present the socio-demographic characteristics of elementary teachers in the District of Indang Il; 2) find out the elementary teachers' proficiency in Mathematics of their pupils; 3) determine the pupils' level of achievement in Mathematics; 4) ascertain the relationship between the socio-demographic characteristics of teachers and their proficiency; and 5) ascertain the relationship between the teachers' proficiency and the level of achievement in Mathematics of their pupils. Data were gathered through the administration of questionnaires and the Teachers' Proficiency Test in Elementary to 52 elementary teachers in the District of Indang Il. The result of the Mathematics Achievement Test, given to 2,779 pupils of 1 1 schools in the same district, was also gathered and used as the secondary data. The statistical tools used were mean, standard deviation, frequency counts, percentage, Pearson-Product-Moment-Correlation Coefficient, Point Biserial Correlation Coefficient, Contingency Coefficient and the Chi-Square Test. Findings revealed that majority of the teacher-respondents were young; female; with MS/MA units; specialized in General Curriculum; had teaching experience of I to 10 xiv years was considered less experienced; had permanent positions in teaching; did not attend trainings; were members of organization/s; and obtained their eligibilities through the Professional Board of Examination for Teachers (PBET). Results confessed that almost two-thirds had a "very satisfactory" to an "excellent" level of proficiency in Mathematics based on the results of the Teachers' Proficiency Test in Elementary Mathematics. Findings showed that except for Grade IV, majority of the pupil-respondents had a "fair" level of achievement from the Grade Il to VI pupils. Only Grade IV pupils had a "satisfactory" level of achievement in Mathematics. The study showed that the socio-demographic characteristics of the teachers, such as age, membership in organization/s, teaching experience and field of specialization were found significantly related to the teachers' level of proficiency in Mathematics. The study also showed that the teachers' proficiency was significantly related to the pupils' achievement in Mathematics.
