PETELO, MIKO LUIGI L., and RODEROS, LOUIS CARLOS O. Relationship of Exercise, Physical Fitness, and Dietary Habits to the Academic Performance of the BS Nursing Students in Cavite State University. Special Problem.Bachelor of Science in Nursing.Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2012. Adviser: Vina V. Velasco, RN
A study was conducted to determine the relationship of exercise, physical fitness, and dietary habits to the academic performance of the BS Nursing students in Cavite State University. The respondents were 174 regular BS Nursing students from levels I-IV.
The questionnaire focused on determining the respondent’s exercise patterns, their physical fitness as to their body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), and the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and their dietary habits. The GPA of the respondents served as a secondary data which is retrieved from the University Registrar.
It was found in the study that the BS Nursing students at Cavite State University were dominantly between the ages of 16 — 19, with more female students than male nursing and most were on their fourth year level.
The types of exercise/s the nursing students commonly engaged in were walking/brisk walking, running/jogging and dancing, or those that do not normally utilizes exercise implements/tools. Most of them exercised out of school, for an average of 1 to 2 days per week for about 10 to 30 minutes each session and, on a somewhat moderate level of activity. As per their result of computed BMI, WHR and BFP elucidate, nursing students generally have ideal body weight, with waist-hip ratio that are categorized as low risk, and most can be considered healthy in terms of BFP. Statistical results revealed that the food preference as well as the dietary practices of the respondents were just “somewhat healthy”. In general, the Grade Point Average (GPA) of the BS Nursing students ranged from 1.8 — 2.19, interpreted as average academic performance. The students’ level of exercise, physical fitness level, and the dietary habits as to their food preferences have no influence on their academic performance. On the other hand, only the dietary practices of nursing students have significant influence on their academic performance.
