Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2009. Adviser: Dr. Josefina R. Rint. This study was conducted to determine the Effects of text messaging on English proficiency in Third and fourth level nursing students in Cavite State University. The effects of text messaging on the English proficiency were based on ENGL 1, ENGL 2 and ENGL 8 subjects and the questionnaire provided. It specifically aimed to: determine the demographic profile of the third and fourth level nursing students in Cavite State University; evaluate the level of performance of nursing students in ENGL 1, ENGL 2, and ENGL 8; compare the ratings in ENGL 1, ENGL 2, and ENGL 8 with the ratings in spelling, construction sentences, identifying error, choosing synonyms of the given word and subject and verb agreement; determine the frequency of text messaging among nursing students in Cavite State University; determine competency of nursing students in terms of spelling, construction of sentences, identifying error, choosing synonyms of the given word and subject and verb agreement; evaluate how text messaging affects their grades in ENGL 1, ENGL 2, and ENGL 8; and determine how frequency of text messaging affects their English proficiency. The study was conducted at the third and fourth floor of the nursing building in the vicinity of Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, from March 2008 to March 2009. The researchers used a total of 157 respondents which resulted to 51 third and 106 fourth level nursing students. Each was given a total of l0&- item test: question. The questionnaire is divided into two parts: the first part focused_ on- the, demographic_ data about the respondents such as: age, gender, year level, average grade in their respective.. English subjects and some questions regarding factors- highty affecting their performance delivered by text messaging; the second part of the instrument will include set of 100 questions- to test their knowledge in terms- of competency in spelling, sentence construction, identifying error, choosing synonyms and subject-verb agreement. Text messaging is widely used and its utilization is evident on some parameters such as age, gender; and. year level and section of the nursing students in Cavite State University. Ratings in academic performance among. English subjects were affected by text messaging in terms of frequency of using abbreviations in sending text messages and difficulty to spell words correctly because of text.messaging. Statistical analysis showed that nursing students' English proficiency was not affected by text messaging. Nursing students' English performance still depends on the foundation of their previous education and exposure to the English language. Students who are already proficient in the language will retain their perfoirnance even they utilize text messaging regardless of its time frame and utilization of textisms.
