Abstract: BUTALID, KATHLYN A. Poverty Representation in Reel Time and Witness. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication major in Journalism. Cavite State University. Indang, Cavite. March 2014. Adviser: Ms. Bonalyn S. Caisip. This study was conducted from November 2013 to March 2014 at Cavite State University Main Campus, researcher’s house, GMA Network and university library to determine poverty representation in the selected documentaries of Reel Time and Witness. Specifically it aimed to: analyze the images of people in poverty and Third World presented in Reel Time’s Salat and Lusong and I Witness’ Alkansiya and Buto't Balat; determine the elements used in framing poverty in Reel Time’s Salat and Lusong and I Witness’ Alkansiya and Buto't Balat; and determine the motivation of Reel Time and I Witness’ staff regarding poverty representation. Interview is used to gather data in this study. Textual analysis is used to analyze the images of people in poverty and Third World. The results of the study show that images of people in poverty presented in the selected documentaries were underprivileged family, dependent and malnourished children, insufficient assets for the family, frail and vulnerable children, socially mature child, superstitious poor, and the underpaid worker. Moreover, representations of Third World poverty in the selected documentaries include scarce resources, hunger and starvation, malnutrition, financial instability, unaffordable good health, child labor, lack of education,and unequal distribution of resources. Reel Time’s Salat and Lusong include interviews, music, and location shots in their documentaries. Meanwhile, Reel Time's Lusong does not include narration and talking heads. J Witness’ Alkansiya and Buto't Balat include interviews, music, location shots, and narration in their documentaries. J Witness’ Alkansiya does not have talking heads either.
