Abstract: CALDERON, CATHERINE V. The Use of SMS Abbreviations and its Effect on the Written Language of BAMC Students. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication major in Journalism. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2011. Adviser: Mrs. Lisette D. Mendoza. The study aimed to determine the effects of using SMS abbreviations on the written language of BAMC students. Specifically, the study attempted to identify the most commonly used SMS abbreviations among BAMC students, to determine how often students use SMS abbreviations, to explain why students use style of shortcut texting, to identify how attached are the students into texting, and to discuss the effects of SMS abbreviations on written language of BAMC students. The main respondents of the study were 138 Mass Communication students which was the census of students who were available during the conduct of the study. Descriptive- Correlational method of research was used to identify the effects and relationship between the use of SMS and its effect on the written language. Survey questionnaires were given, and the students were asked to write an essay with five to seven sentences after watching "Planet Philippines" to determine the effects of using SMS abbreviations on the written language of the respondents. Majority of the respondents commonly used SMS abbreviations such as 'PIs (Please)' , 'Thx (Thanks)' , 'U (You)', 'b4 (B4)', 'LOL (Laugh Out Loud)' Moreover, results of the survey revealed that the respondents only used SMS abbreviations when needed. Based on the results, it showed that majority of the respondents disagreed that using SMS was convenient to use in conversation. Meanwhile, survey results found out that most of the respondents sent more than 20 messages a day and received 15 to 20 messages a day but agreed that they only responded to those messages they received only when needed. Cross tabulation of results of the survey and essay writing revealed that 13.04 % of the students were slightly affected even if they were attached into texting.Furthermore, the results of the survey and essay writing activity showed that using SMS abbreviations did not affect the written language of BAMC students.
