Online resources: Abstract: In the Philippines where the availability of textbooks in technical vocational institutions is still a serious problem, there is a desperate need for developing self-instructional materials or packages for the training of technicians and skilled manpower to man the machines of industry. It is on this premise that this study ventured on the development of instructional materials or modules to improve the outcome of the teaching-learning situation for the benefit of the students. Through the use of modules, the objectives set forth, which are centered on the learners, are attained more fully than through the use of textbooks alone. Furthermore the use of modular instructional materials places the user in greater control of his learning and accepts greater responsibilities for learning and demands greater maturity on his part. The Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University is not spared of the critical problem of securing adequate number of textbooks and other references to insure effective theoretical and workable practical output in the teaching~learning process. This could be remedied through the expertise of the teachers in the preparation of instructional materials in module form. These materials will partly solve the problem of individual differences in multi-level classes in one shop session. This study aimed at the modularization of selected difficulties of students in milling machine works for the: machine shop technology. Specifically, it tried to answer the following questions: : 1. What are the most serious difficulties of students in milling machine works for machine shop. technology? 2. How could these difficulties be modularized? 3. Are these modules effective? The researcher examined books and references to come up with a comprehensive examination covering six topics in milling machine works, A test of 90 items, 15 items for every topic, was constructed and evaluated in this study. The topics covered were: . 1. Parts and Functions of a Universal Milling Machine 3 2. Milling Machine Attachments; 3. Milling Cutters and their Holding Devices; 4, . Indexing Methods and Indexing Calculations; 5. Parts, Functions, and Calculations of Spur Gears and 6. Parts and Functions of a Bevel Gear, Four experts in the field of machine shop technology examined the prepared examination and gave comments and suggestions for its improvement. Twenty second year technical students took the test. Three out of the six topics were identified "difficult to the students in general. The topics covered were the same for both groups. A posttest consisting of 30 items was constructed based on the contents of the three modules, The results of the aptitude test show that generally, three out of six topics are difficult to the students. The development, evaluation, and revision of the modules considering the time element, difficulty level of words and statements used, and appropriateness of evaluating instruments yielded favorable results.

Thesis (Master of Technician Education) Marikina Institute of Science and Technology

Includes bibliographical references.

In the Philippines where the availability of textbooks in technical vocational institutions is still a serious problem, there is a desperate need for developing self-instructional materials or packages for the training of technicians and skilled manpower to man the machines of industry.

Specifically, it tried to answer the following questions: :

1. Parts and Functions of a Universal Milling Machine 3
2. Milling Machine Attachments;
3. Milling Cutters and their Holding Devices;
4, . Indexing Methods and Indexing Calculations;
5. Parts, Functions, and Calculations of Spur Gears and
6. Parts and Functions of a Bevel Gear,
Four experts in the field of machine shop technology examined the prepared examination and gave comments and suggestions for its improvement.

Twenty second year technical students took the test. Three out of the six topics were identified "difficult to the students in general.

Three modules covering the identified difficulties were developed, The researcher studied books, references, and sample modules to come up with the modules. The researcher attended a seminar-workshop in Educational Technology conducted at the Marikina Institute of Science and Technology for two weeks with emphasis on module development.

Drawings or illustrations were used to make the acquisition of learning easy and interesting, Students were made to answer questions at some points to test comprehension and maintain activeness. Proper responses to the questions were
concealed with colored papers, For easy reading, letters were capitalized and words used were easy to understand.

An assistant dean and concurrently head of instructions at the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, College of Engineering and Technology headed the list of
five evaluators (peers) of the modules prepared. A vice-chairman of practice teaching observation and participation and a vice-chairman of practice teaching professional subjects and two instructors in machine shop technology examined the three modules and gave comments and suggestions toward their improvement. In addition five randomly selected students majoring in machine shop technology also gave their comments and suggestions.

“he three modules differed in subject matter but they had the following parts in common:

1. Introduction

2. Purpose

3. Pre-requisite Concepts

4, Behavioral Objectives

5 Modular Program

6. Evaluation

In gathering data for the evaluation as to the effectiveness of the modules, the researcher divided the group into two. One was an experimental group (10 students) and the other, a control group (10 students). The experimental group used the modules and the control group was given a lecture. The topics covered were the same for both
groups.

A posttest consisting of 30 items was constructed based on the contents of the three modules,

The results of the aptitude test show that generally, three out of six topics are difficult to the students.

The development, evaluation, and revision of the modules considering the time element, difficulty level of words and statements used, and appropriateness of evaluating instruments yielded favorable results.
