Abstract: MOJICA, JASPER D. Economic Effects of Coconut Scale Insect (Cocolisap) in Buko Pie Producers in Selected Towns of Laguna. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Economics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2015. Adviser: Dr. Elizabeth E. Polinga. The study was conducted to determine the socio-economic characteristics of the huko pie producers in selected towns of Laguna; determine the volume and source of coconut being used in the production of buko pie before and after the occurrence of cocolisap; determine the estimated volume of production of buko pie before and after the occurrence of cocolisap; compare the income generated by buko pie producer before and after the occurrence of cocolisap; and identify the problems that huko pie producers encountered due to occurrence of cocolisap and the initial actions they employ to overcome it. The study was conducted in top three towns producing buko pie in Laguna namely: Calamba, Los Batios, and San Pablo. A total of 23 participants were interviewed using a prepared interview schedule. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and t —test was used to determine the difference in production and income before and after the occurrence of cocolisap. The study shows that majority of the buko pie producers were female, married, with an average of 51 years old. All of the participants had attended formal school and majority were high school graduate. The average household size is five. Aside from income coming from buko pie they have other sources of income coming from employment and other business. They were also selling other pasalubong goods for additional income. The average years of operation of buko pie producer was sixteen. The sources of coconut meat being used in buko pie production before the occurrence of cocolisap came from the nearby towns of Alaminos, Calauan, Bay, San Pablo, Sta.Cruz, and Nagcarlan. After the occurrence of cocolisap the sources of coconut meat used in the production of buko pie was in the nearby provinces of Quezon and Bicol. The amount of coconut meat being used in the production of buko pie before the occurrence of cocolisap had an average of 58 kilos per day, however, after the occurrence of cocolisap had average weight of 37 kilos per day. There were significant difference between the income and production of buko pie before and after the occurrence of cocolisap. The common problems encountered by the buko pie producer due to occurrence of cocolisap was limited supply of buko; high price of buko; difficulties in finding supplier of buko in the nearby towns and low income coming from buko pie. The initial actions they employ to overcome these were increase the price of buko pie; purchase buko in nearby provinces (Bicol and Quezon); and sell cassava cake and yema cake as alternative to buko pie.

After the occurrence of cocolisap the sources of coconut meat used in the production of buko pie was in the nearby provinces of Quezon and Bicol.
