MOJICA, MINETTE R. Design and Evaluation of a Non-Circulating Hydroponics System for Coffee Seedling Production. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. December 2016. Adviser: Dr. Ruel A. Mojica.
The study was conducted from July 2016 to October 2016 at the National Coffee Research Development and Extension Center (NCRDEC). Specifically, the study aimed to: 1) conduct a preliminary investigation/documentation on the current production of coffee seedlings; 2) design a non-circulating hydroponics system in relation to the criteria offered by seedling propagators; 3) construct the non-circulating hydroponics system; and 4) evaluate the performance of the system in terms of growth rate of coffee seedlings such as length of roots, number of produced roots, the number of leaves produced and the percentage survival. The experimental materials were limited to Robusta coffee and the experimental treatments were limited to the frequency of replenishing liquid fertilizers by one (1) week, two (2) weeks and 1 month. The liquid fertilizers used were fermented plant juice, sludge and vermicomposting. The liquid fertilizers were replenished at different intervals. In treatment 1, 2 and 3 the liquid fertilizers were replenished weekly, while on treatment 4, 5 and 6 the liquid fertilizers were replenished every two weeks. Treatments 7, 8 and 9 were replenished with fertilizers every one month. The study showed that the liquid fertilizers was not sufficient to provide the nutrients needed of the coffee cuttings. The nutrient analysis showed it has small amounts of macro nutrients. The fertilizer applied and the frequency of application have no influence in the growth of the cuttings.
