The backyard hog fattening project was conducted at Barangay Asis I, Mendez, Cavite from October 17, 2015 to January 31, 2016, generally to expose the student to backyard hog fattening enterprise. Specifically, the project was conducted for the student to gain actual experience in hog fattening production, enhance their entrepreneurial skills; and earn profit from this production.
There were 4 hogs with an average initial weight of 14 kg fattened for 106 days. The fattening hogs were given feeds with added odor-eliminator three times a day, at about 7:00A.M, 12:00 N.N, and 5:00 P.M. Hog starter pellet was provided for the first month which was gradually shifted to hog grower pellet on the second month. On the third and a half month to market period, the hogs were provided with hog finisher pellet. A total of 700 kg of feeds was consumed by the hogs with an average of 175 kg. After the fattening period, the hogs attained a final total weight of 348 kg or an average weight of
87 kg with an average daily gain in weight of 0.69 kg. The feed efficiency computed was
2.39 kg. The fattened hogs were marketed at P 110.00 per kg on liveweight basis.
At the end of raising period the project incurred a total cost of P 30,774.00 with a total sale of P38, 420.00. It realized a net income of P 7,646.00 for four hogs sold on a live weight basis. The return of investment (ROI) was 24.85%.
