This research investigated the lived experiences of bereaving women among the respondents living in upland municipalities of Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to: 1. to determine the lived experiences of bereaving women who lost their loved ones; 2. to determine the bereaving process of women who lost their loved ones; 3. to determine the meaning of bereavement for women who lost their loved ones.
The research was conducted in upland municipalities of Cavite which includes Alfonso, Amadeo, Bailen, Indang, Magallanes and Mendez on March 2017. The respondents were the women who had been through widowhood. The researcher used interpretative phenomenological analysis. There were 9 respondents in the study. The respondents were women aged 50 to 80 years old who had been widows for more than 2 years. The said respondents are legally married to their late husband.
Results of the study showed that the majority of the respondents had a hard time living without their husband. Most of the respondents became widow for more than 10 years and did not commit in to new relationship. Majority of the respondents claimed that they lost not just a husband and a father of their children but instead a partner in life. Bereavement for the respondents means longing for the presence of their husbands in their life.
There are 3 themes that supports the lived experiences of bereaving women which includes aloneness, Bowlby's phase of yearning and searching and Kubler-Ross' stage of depression. On the other hand, there are 7 themes that supports the bereaving process of women who lost their husbands which includes avoidance, Kubler-Ross' stages of denial, anger, bargaining and acceptance and Bowlby's disorganization and re-organization. Some respondents went through the stage of denial wherein they refused to accept the fact that they loss their husbands. Rarely in most cases of widows, among the respondents the researchers interviewed, there was one participant who claimed that she does not went through bereavement. Most of the respondents went through depression and longed for their husband. According to the widows, the support from friends and relatives help them to cope up with the grief they experienced. Most of the participants claimed that when they are in the process of bereavement, children are their prior responsibility which causes them not to break down. Although widows ascent to the permanent reality they are in, they were never became alright with the situation. The researchers conclude that widows who spent most of the time with their husband have higher risk of bereaving.
