The presence of lectin in the hemolymph of four ant species was determined in a study conducted at the Crop Protection Laboratory, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite and Biochemistry Laboratory, Institute of Chemistry of the Philippines, UPLB, Los Banos Laguna from October to December 2001. Characterization of the hemagglutinating activity of lectin extracted from the hemolymph of ant species was done based on blood specificity, and calcium and temperature dependency.
Four factor factorial experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Data gathered were subjected to Analysis of Variance and differences among treatment means was determined using the Least Significant Difference.
Lectin was detected in the hemolymph of Oecophylla smaragdina, Ectomomyrmex sp, Odontomachus sp and Diacamma sp. Hemagglutinating activity of lectin was non-blood specific, non-C type and stable at 4C.
Of the four ant species, Oecophylla smaragdina has the best potential as lectin source based on the high agglutinating activity of the lectin obtained from its hemolymph.
