AURE, SHIRLY UMBAL, Cavite State University, Indang Cavite, April 2003 Teaching Methodology Preferences of Elementary School Teachers in the District of Alfonso. Major Adviser: Dr. Leonora A. Mojica
This study was conducted mainly to determine the teaching methodology preferences of elementary teachers in the district of Alfonso. Specifically, it aimed to 1) describe the demo-socio-psychological characteristics of elementary teachers in the district of Alfonso; 2) identify the teaching methodology preferences of elementary teachers in the district of Alfonso; 3) determine the extent of use of the teaching methodologies; 4) ascertain the factors associated with the teaching methodology preferences of elementary teachers; and 5) identify the problems encountered in the use of the preferred teaching methodologies.
Data were gathered through administration of questionnaires to 146 elementary teachers from the eighteen public schools in the district of Alfonso.
The elementary teachers in public schools in the district of Alfonso were young, with the mean age of 37.42. Majority were female, married, with an average of 14.97 years of teaching experience, with masteral units, and had attended seminars.
Results revealed that the elementary teachers had very favorable attitude towards teaching, pupils, and immediate superiors.
Findings showed that cooperative learning, deductive, inductive, discussion, recitation, drill and practice, written assignment, brainstorming, field trip, role-playing,
Problem solving, movies, using slides, using overhead projector, TV with
VHS/VCD/DVD and computer-based instruction were the highly preferred teaching methodologies.
On the other hand, lecture, lecture demonstration, case studies, modular approach/instruction, panel, project method and laboratory method were the less preferred teaching methodologies.
The study also revealed that deductive, inductive, demonstration, discussion, recitation, drill and practice, written assignment, cooperative learning role-playing, and problem solving were the more often used teaching methodologies. On the contrary, the less often used methodologies were lecture, lecture demonstration, case studies, brainstorming, field trip, modular approach/instruction, panel, project, laboratory, movies using slides, using overhead projector, TV with VHS/VCD/DVD, and computer-based instruction.
Data showed that the demo-socio-psychological characteristics of elementary teachers such as sex, civil status, experience in teaching, subject preference, educational attainment, attendance in seminar, attitude towards teaching, pupils, and superiors, were related to the teaching methodology preferences and extent of use of teaching methodologies.
Results further showed that low level of comprehension of pupils was the most frequently mentioned problem in the use of the preferred teaching methodologies. On the
Other hand lack of mastery of subject matter was the least mentioned.
