"Sewage, or wastewater, is composed of all the material that flows from household plumbing systems, including washing and bathing water and toilet wastes. Municipal wastewater also includes industrial wastes. In many cities, storm water runoff that flows into street drains enters the sewage system as well. Sewage treatment, or domestic wastewater treatment, is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage, both runoff and domestic. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove physical, chemical and biological contaminants. Its objective is to produce a waste stream and a solid waste or sludge suitable for discharge or reuse back into the environment. Domestic Sewage removed from a cesspool and Septic Tank Sludge or residual sludge from septic tanks and similar installations for the treatment of Domestic Sewage. The contents of lavatories and water used for washing and cooking (but excluding water used by a business preparing food and drink for consumption other than on the premises). The waste acceptance procedures for Domestic Waste are controlled by the Environment Agency Permits and Exemptions that we operate under. This book is an introductory text on sewage pollution and microbiology for students of science, medicine and environmental science."--Back cover
