The lists of onion growers from four barrios of Tanza, Cavite were obtained front the respective barangay captains of the selected barrios. A total of 100 respondents were chosen from the four barrios of Tanza by means of simple random sampling.
The age of the respondents ranged from 20 to 71 with an average age of 45, Majority of the farmers attained elementary education only. most of the respondents were lessees. The number of dependents ranged from zero to LO with an average of five, 1-10St of the respondents have spent long years in onion farming, The area devoted in onion growing averaged to 1,750 square meters.
The reported management practices of the respondents were plowing, harrowing, planting, weeding, mulching, fertilizations, harvesting and controlling inspect pest and
Diseases.
It was found that most of the respondents obtained planting materials outside of the province. Almost all of the respondents followed the system of transplanting. Majority of the growers weeded their plants through hand pulling. in fertilization, they preferred the broadcast method, Hundreds of respondents applied fertilizer before planting. As their means of plowing and harrowing, majority of fanners used carabao and a few of them used the combination of tractor and carabao. It was found that worm was the most common insect pest attacking their crops. They used hay as mulching materials 0 Majority of the respondents harvested onion crops when they are already matured.
The study revealed that age, educational attainment, number of dependents, tenure status, experience in farming and the size of the farm were not associated with the management practices.
The most frequently mentioned problems of the respondents were high prices of fertilizer, lack of capital, high prices of pesticides, occurrence of plant diseases, prevalence of weeds, poor conditions of feeder road in the area and poor quality of the soil.
