Performance Evaluation of an Automated Onion Grader. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor
of Science in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang,

An automated onion grader was designed, developed and evaluated at Cavite State
University- Main Campus, Indang, Cavite. The primary components of the machine include the
one-hp three-phase electric motor, hopper, sieve assembly, collection unit, counter unit and the
main frame. This study was experimental in nature where the technical performance of the
machine was limited to the determination of grading efficiency, grading rate, accuracy of
counting, and machine's capacity. The grading efficiency of the machine was found to be
maximum at 168-171 oscillation/min with 60.60 percent. The accuracy of counting of the
machine showed a peak result at l 49-151 oscillation/min. On the other hand, the grading rate
and capacity were highest at188-192 oscillation/min with 20.73kg/min and 37.87kg/min,
respectively. The initial cost of the machine was P29, 952.00. The cost of grading would be
P0.20/kg and the break-even point can be attained with at least 38,333.33kg of onions graded
per year. The time it would take to recover the investment for the machine was 3 years.
