This study was conducted to optimize the composition of soymilk-based fermentation medium for antibiotic production of the actinomycete isolate B-ROS6. The optimum concentration of each component of the medium was determined one at a time. The antimicrobial activity was assayed using the agar plug method against Bacillus subtilis B1514. The inhibitory activity of the actinomycete isolate B-ROS6 grown in formulated fermentation medium at pH 9 against B. subtilis B1514, S. aureus ATCC12600, C. albicans ATCC10231 and A. brasiliensis ATCC16404 is not significantly different to that obtained in YMA. Thus, the antibiotics produced in the formulated fermentation medium at pH 9 is comparable to that produced in YMA. This formulated fermentation medium, which contains locally available substrates, is also less expensive compared to YMA. Therefore, it is an excellent alternative to the commercially available YMA.

Results revealed that the optimum concentration of soymilk, table salt, and coconut water for the growth and antibiotic production of the actinomycete isolate B-ROS6 was 400 ml, 1.5 g and 150 ml, respectively.
