ADRALES, JAMES ROI G., LEMOS, RIEZZA 0., MENESE, JEAN M., ROSARIO,
VERDEE GLENN M., AND UMALI, JOHN CARLO L. Assessment on the Knowledge,
Attitudes, and Sanitary Practices of Stall Owners among Public Wet Markets in the City
of Dasmarinas, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Medical
Technology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2022. Adviser: Jonell P.
Andaya, RMT. The study entitled "Assessment on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Sanitary Practices of
Stall Owners among Public Wet Markets in the City of Dasmarifias, Cavite" was conducted to
determine the level of knowledge, existing attitudes, and sanitary practices of stall owners
among public wet markets in the City of Dasmarinas, Cavite. It officially began in October 2020 and was accomplished in June 2022.
The study employed the quantitative, descriptive-correlational type of research where a
total of 88 market stall owners and vendors in the City of Dasmarifias, Cavite was chosen
using non-probability convenience sampling and was surveyed using an expert-approved
Filipino-translated research questionnaire. Based on the thorough analysis, testing, and interpretation of the data, the following
findings were concluded. The demographic profile of the participants within the Pamilihang
bayan and Kadiwa public market comprises a majority of female high school graduates within
the age range of 30-39 years old. Additionally, more than half of the vendors rent their space in
the public wet markets. The existing level of knowledge among the participants with a mean score of
7.73 out of 10 is considered highly knowledgeable in areas related to standard market hygiene,
sanitation, and policies. The overall attitude of the respondents with a mean of 4.65 out of five
shows their strong agreement, thus, indicating positive attitudes towards the standard market
hygiene (including handwashing and proper food handling); sanitation (including disinfection
and vermin control); and standard market policies (including compliance of health certificate,
sanitary permit, and responsibilities of market vendors). Similarly, the overall sanitary practice of
the respondents with a mean of 4.53 out of five concludes that the participants always observe
and act on the standard market hygiene, sanitation, and policies set by the regulating
authorities. The result of the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a statistically significant result of p-
value = .005 when comparing the knowledge with the sex of the respondents, with the female having a significantly higher mean score of 7.94, thus, female vendors are considered
more knowledgeable than male vendors in the surveyed wet markets. Spearman's test for association showed a highly statistically significant result
between the attitude score and the practice score of the participants, having the pvalue =
<.001, r = .480. Hence, a moderate positive relationship is present, wherein, an increase in
attitudes reflects a moderate increase in sanitary practices of market vendors on activities
related to standard market hygiene, sanitation, and their compliance in market policies.
Following the result of the study, it is recommended for future researchers to have
similar research with larger populations and inquire for an updated policy to be used as the
primary reference of the study. For the sanitary inspectors, the researchers advised
frequently visit the market to monitor compliance. Furthermore, it is suggested for the local
government unit to conduct programs regarding proper handwashing, awareness of the
different recommended disinfectants, and other programs focused on increasing the
knowledge, particularly of male vendors, as it has been the gap observed after the conduct of
the study.
