The study was conducted from January to March 2019 in twenty-two (22) public high schools in selected cities along west valley fault line in Laguna. The main objective of this study is to determine the importance of disaster risk reduction preparedness of public high schools along west valley fault line in Laguna. Specifically, this study aimed to: (1) determine the profile of schools in terms of land area, year school was established, population of school personnel in 2018, population of students in 2018; (2) determine the profile of the following participants; school personnel and students; (3) assess the level of preparedness of the school personnel in terms of safe learning facilities, school disaster management, risk reduction/resilience education; (4) assess the level of preparedness of the students in terms of safe learning facilities, school disaster management, risk reduction/resilience education; and (5) determine the significant difference between the assessment of the school personnel and students towards the level of preparedness of public high school. This study utilized the descriptive-comparative method of research.
The data were computed by means of mean, frequency, ratio, percentage, standard deviation, and Z-test. In this research, the views of school personnel and students were taken by a survey questionnaire, adapted from the Department of Education, Division of Cavite Memorandum 31. Series of 2017, Disaster Risk Reduction Management Monitoring tool. The research comprises twenty-two (22) public high schools in selected cities along west valley fault line in Laguna. This research is limited to only eight (8) personnel and eight (8) students in each public high school. A total of 352 participants responded in the given survey questionnaire.
The findings have revealed that the disaster preparedness level of the schools were highly prepared in all the provisions of school disaster risk reduction management and there is no significant difference between the assessment of school personnel and students towards the level of preparedness in terms of safe learning facilities, school disaster management, risk reduction and resilience education of public high schools. Active participation of stakeholders is really important to address different needs of school in relation to safety hazards preparedness. It is recommended that these schools be re-oriented on the management of evacuation camps since they serve as evacuation centers during emergencies.
