This study was conducted primarily to determine the emotional intelligence and coping strategies of senior science high school students in selected towns in Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to identify the demographic profile of the respondents, determine the level of emotional intelligence and coping strategies, identify the coping strategies commonly utilized by the respondents and to determine the significant relationship between emotional intelligence and coping strategies of the respondents.

A total of 156 students from the selected Science high schools in Cavite served as the respondents of the study.

In this study, the researchers used of the emotional intelligence test derived from the work of Daniel Goleman. The test is composing of five aspects and five items for each aspects of emotional intelligence. Each item of the test has three options or choices.

The modified emotional intelligence test was composed of twenty-five items and was
verified by three experts to make sure that it really served its purpose.

The coping strategies test consisted of 20 items and each item has five choices. Different levels and corresponding score valued from five as the highest and one as the lowest. The coping strategies test was used to determine the person’s level of coping or ability to cope. The researchers modified five items for four dimensions of coping strategies namely behavioral strategy, cognitive strategy, and problem focused coping and emotion focused coping. These aspects were determined depending on the participants’ answers and scores.

The data were gathered using the said questionnaires and were analyzed using frequency distribution, percentage. Chi- square and Spearman’s rank correlation.

The majority of the respondents are 16 years old and above. Most of them are female, the majority of the respondents belong to a nuclear family and most of them are Catholic. When it comes to monthly income, majority of the respondents have Php20.000 and below.

The emotional intelligence level of the respondents is high based on the result of the Emotional Intelligence Test as to self- awareness, empathy, self-regulation and social skills and motivation is very high.

The coping strategies of the respondents are also high based on the result of Coping Strategies test as to cognitive strategy, problem-focused strategy and emotion focused strategy and the behavioral strategy aspect is average.

Majority of the respondents commonly utilized communication in order for them to cope with stressful situations that they encounter when it comes to behavioral strategy aspects. In the cognitive strategies aspect, most of the respondents usually divert their attention by listening to music to relax. Problem focused coping strategy revealed that the majority of the respondents prefers solving problems by searching for the best way to Solve whatever problem they may encounter. On the emotion-focused aspect revealed that most of the respondents usually seek spiritual guidance of the Almighty God when they experience such conflicts and struggles.

There is a significant relationship on emotional intelligence and coping strategies of the senior science high school students. With the result obtained, the researchers consequently concluded that the higher the level of Emotional Intelligence will be, the higher level of coping strategies becomes.

There is no significant relationship on the demographic profile of the respondents and emotional intelligence of the respondents.

The study revealed insignificant relationships between the emotional intelligence and demographic profile of the respondents. The relationship between the coping strategies and the demographic profile of the respondents was insignificant except for the age.

The study proves and shows the different coping strategies and emotional intelligence of the Senior Science high school students in selected rows in Cavite. The study shows that the respondents can easily adapt and respond to the certain negative circumstances they commonly face. They have effective coping strategies in order to cope up to the conflict that arises in their life. The researchers therefore conclude that the more a person belongs to the mature stage or in the stage of maturity it can also be a significant indicator with regards to the coping ability and how they respond to stress, conflicts and negative situations that they encounter and will face for the future.
