This study was conducted to determine the effect of gender on the levels of emotional intelligence and college adjustment needs of college freshman students at Cavite State University. Indang Cavite for SY 2010-2011.
Specifically, this study sought to: 1) determine the distribution of freshman students according to gender: 2) determine the level of emotional intelligence of the students in terms of intrapersonal scale, interpersonal scale, stress management, adaptabilitv. and general mood scale: 3) determine the level of college adjustment needs of the students in terms of anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, substance abuse, self esteem, interpersonal problem. family problem. academic problem. and career problem: 4) determine the relationship between levels of emotional intelligence and college adjustment needs of the freshman students. and 5) determine if the levels of emotional intelligence and college adjustment needs of the college freshman students would differ when grouped according to gender.
The researcher used three sets of questionnaires, namely: (1) Personal Information Sheet (2) Emotional Intelligence Scale. and (3) the College Adjustment Scale. All of the instruments were administered to the respondents. The sampling procedure used was stratified proportional random sampling method in order to determine the target respondents necessary to complete the data collection.
Results of the study revealed that the majority of the respondents were females implying that the dominant gender of first year college students enrolled at Cavite StateUniversity for SY 2010-2011 was female. The overall emotional intelligence of male and female college freshman students was on the average level. Furthermore, male and female college freshman students experienced high adjustment concems in their college life.
Correlation result of this study showed that there was significant relationship between the ability of the students to make use of their emotions and their ability to adjust to college life. The test of difference statistically found that female college freshman students had higher emotional intelligence than male college freshman students. On the other hand, the college adjustment needs of the male and female freshmen showed no significant difference.
