ELEAZAR, EDITHA MAE G., GEDA, MA. TESALONICA P. and MAGLUPAY, VENUS C. The Impact of Retirement in Health Maintenance and Quality of Life among selected Senior Citizens in Trece Martires City, Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2013. Adviser: Prof. Nenita B. Panaligan, RN, MAN.

This study focused on the impact of retirement in health maintenance and quality of life among the selected senior citizens. Specifically, it aimed: to determine the health
maintenance and quality of life among senior citizens before and after retirement; and determine any changes on health maintenance and quality of life in relation to factors such as time and health status.

The study was conducted from September 2012 to February 2013 at the vicinity of Trece Martires City, Cavite.

Using Slovin’s formula as sampling technique, the sample size was taken, with a total of 387 senior citizens ages 65 and above and approximately 30 participants from each barangay of Trece Martires City, Cavite. The demographic characteristics were gathered using a self-formulated questionnaire.

Based on the findings, it was found out that there were significant changes in health maintenance and quality of life among senior citizens after retirement. Retirement has an effect on senior citizen’s medical health history, intake of medications, perception and management of allergies, alcohol use, hobbies and leisure activities, exercise, sleeping pattern and compliance for health check-ups.

In terms of the participants’ quality of life, the only significant change that happened was the change in economic status. The Stress management, spirituality and roles and relationships remained the same.

Moreover, the results regarding health maintenance were very alarming not only to the health care professionals but also to the family of each participant. For this reason, the proponents would like to recommend that the senior citizens must be able to know the importance of routine check-ups, particularly those who have chronic illnesses and must be educated on what attitudes and lifestyle practices need to be modified. Students should support the elders in this life transition as well as their parents who are near the retirement phase to understand the necessary preparations they must do in order to cope with the transition. Furthermore, the local government unit of Trece Martires City must be aware of the findings and should plan necessary actions to support the senior citizens.

Lastly, future researchers need to explore on how the findings pertaining to health maintenance and quality of life increases life expectancy, morbidity and mortality among the elders.
