The study was conducted from February 2021 to August 2022 to determine and analyze The Status of the Domestic Helper in Hong Kong. The general objective of this study is to determine the status of the Filipino Domestic Helper in Hong Kong. It determined the demographic profile of the Filipino Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong such as age, sex, civil status, number of children, and number of working experiences in Hong Kong; analyzed the status of Filipino Domestic Helper in terms of living conditions and employment status; and analyzed the opportunities and challenges that the Filipino Domestic Helpers encountered in Hong Kong in terms of health care and insurance. The study used a qualitative case study as research design. This study was analyzed by thematic analysis.
This study has 15 participants aged 27 to 58 years old, they were all currently employed in Hong Kong as domestic helpers. All of the participants are female. The span of working experience of the participants ranges from 3 years to 20 years.
According to the 100% of the total population of participants of this study the result showed that the living status of Filipino Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong was in a good status and well ensured. For living conditions all participants were staying in the house of their employer and they had their own respective rooms and bathing area for their personal belongings. For the food, it were also the same as their employer’s food and the meals were free, they can eat what they want to eat. They were also welcome and free to other rooms all over the house, they have access that approved by their employer. Lastly, their communication to outside was always free, because they have their own cellphones to check and communicate with their family and on the day off, they have the right to go wherever they want to go.
As for the employment status of Filipino Domestic Helpers in Hong Kong, most of them show the right and fair agreement between the employer and domestic helper. For the Employment Conditions, the agreement between the employer and the employee on their recruitment condition, contractual agreements, remuneration conditions, the scope of work, and the working time. Both parties must be aware of the terms and content of the stated agreement. The agencies will serve as a third party to facilitate the contract between the employer and the employee.
As for the health care and insurance status Filipino Domestic Helper in Hong
Kong they also in a good status they were well ensured and provided. For the Health Care and Insurances, all participants' expenses were covered by their employer, for instance the monthly check ups and hospital bills were free but some of the participants did not know the benefits of these because they were not experiencing it yet to use it, with that all they knew was it was free and shouldered by their employer. None of all participants experienced leaving work due to sickness. Therefore, the wealth of the worker was well ensured and had their rights and enough benefit to take, there were no unnecessary happenings such as abuse and unequal treatment occurring.
The researchers recommended that this study would help future researchers to broaden their understanding of the situation of domestic workers and could give those ideas and information to help them conduct their own research. Another was the researchers could conduct the same study in a different country then they could use compare and contrast regarding the living status and employment status of every Filipino Domestic Helper. Lastly, Other future researchers would conduct further study about increasing the knowledge about the importance of the opportunities and challenges of every Filipino Domestic Helper encountered.
