The study entitled “Job Stress and Work Attitude of Nurses Working in the Academe and in Hospitals” was conducted in selected schools of nursing and hospitals, both private and public, in the province of Cavite to compare job stress and work attitude of nurses working in the academe and in hospitals.
A total of 202 respondents participated in the study. They came from Cavite State University Don Severino delas Alas Campus, University of Perpetual Help - GMA Campus, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Saint Jude College, University of Perpetual Help — Molino Campus, Saint Dominic College, Ospital ng Tagaytay, Estrella Hospital, Saint Dominic Medical Center, San Lorenzo Ruiz Hospital, Emilio Aguinaldo Medical Center, Dela Salle University — Dr. Rodolfo Poblete Memorial Hospital, and Tanza Family General Hospital and Pharmacy. They were chosen using proportional allocation where the total population of each institution was divided in half.
Based on the results, there were no significant differences in the job stress level of nurses working in the academe and in the hospitals according to their demographic data. However, there was a significant difference in the kind of work attitude of hospital nurses with respect to their age. Statistical analysis also showed that there was no correlation between demographic profile of clinical instructors and job stress to each other. On the other hand, civil status of clinical instructors was correlated with their work attitude while other demographic profile like gender, age, family environment, years of experience and monthly income were vice versa. Years of experience of hospital nurses was correlated with their job stress and work attitude. Monthly income of hospital nurses was correlated with their work attitude.
Job stress and work attitude of nurses working in academe and in hospitals do not differ with respect to their general work condition. Clinical instructors and hospital nurses have equal chances of acquiring job stress as to their physical environment, workload and responsibilities, and social relationship. In addition, clinical instructors and hospital nurses have the same kind of work attitude given consideration of their organizational commitment and job satisfaction.
Clinical instructors experience moderate stress while hospital nurses experience high stress in terms of their physical environment, workload and responsibilities, and social relationship.
Work attitude of hospital nurses can be affected by their age. the civil status of clinical instructors may affect their work attitude. There is a significant relationship between length of service and job stress of hospital nurses. Length of service and monthly income of hospital nurses are significantly related to work attitude. Job stress and work attitude are not significantly related.
