Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder that has received much attention in the press. Autism is characterized by low social functioning impairment in communication and aggressive and self destructive behaviors. Raising a child with Autism is one of the hardest things a parent will ever have to do. It is an over whelming challenge physically and emotionally, adding anxiety to the person caring for the child. This study was conducted to determine the parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism in the municipality of Imus and cities of Dasmarifias and Trece Martires in Cavite. Specifically, the study aimed to describe the demographic profile of the parents of children with Autism in terms of their age, gender, occupation, educational attainment, monthly family income and religion. Determine the level of parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism both based from parent’s perception and the modified standard procedures. Identify significant difference between parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism based on parent’s perception and from the modified standard procedures. Identify significant difference on the level of parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism based on parent’s perception and modified standard procedures in terms of their age, gender, occupation, educational attainment, monthly family income and religion.

This study was conducted from December 2010 to December 2011 in the municipality of Imus and cities of Dasmarifias and Trece Martires, Cavite. Descriptive research was used in the study and the sampling technique used was purposive quota sampling. The parents of the child with Autism were selected to be the respondents of the study.

The instruments used in the study were questionnaire and modified standard procedures. The questionnaire is compose of two parts, namely demographic profile and parent’s ability to care while the modified standard procedures is composed of the correct sequence and guidelines in performing certain activities for providing physiologic, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care. The data collected were treated statistically using mean, frequency, percent distribution, standard deviation and Wilcoxon Signed ranked test.

It was found out that the majority of the parents of the child with Autism were female and in the range of 36 to 40 years old. Most of them were Catholic and with a blue collar job. Nearly every one of them had 20,000 pesos and below as their monthly family income. And almost all of them were college graduates.

Findings revealed that based from the parent’s perception, the level of parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism were all capable in their ability for physiologic, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care.

While based from modified standard procedures, the level of parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism in terms of their ability for physiologic care, psychosocial and spiritual is all capable while they are highly capable in terms of their ability for emotional care. It has been revealed that there is significant difference in parents’ ability to care for a child with autism based on parents perception and modified standard procedures in terms of their ability for physiologic and emotional care. While there is no significant difference in parents’ ability to care to care for a child with Autism based from parents’ perception and modified standards procedures in terms of their ability for psychosocial and spiritual care.

On the other hand, the results of the study showed that there is no significant difference in parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism based from parents’ perception and modified standard procedures in terms of their age, gender, occupation, monthly family income and religion.

Whereas, it has been disclosed that there is significant difference in parent’s ability to care for a child with Autism based from parent’s perception and modified standard procedures in terms of their educational attainment.
