This study was conducted to identify the risk factors of hypertension among residents of Barangay Castanos Cerca, General Emilio Aguinaldo, Cavite. Specifically, it aimed to identify the demographic profile of hypertensive residents of Barangay Castanos Cerca, General Emilio Aguinaldo, Cavite; to determine the modifiable and non-modifiable factors of hypertension, and to determine the factors that commonly cause hypertension among residents. Ninety-two (92) residents out of 496 total population of Barangay Castanos Cerca, General Emilio Aguinaldo, Cavite were chosen as respondents and interviewed from January to February 2007 regarding their demographic profile, lifestyle and history of hypertension.
The research design used in the study was the descriptive method. The simple random technique was applied to take every house of the Barangay to be able to get of sample of persons who are hypertensive. Standard instrument such as blood pressure apparatus, weighing scale, tape measure, and meter stick were used to determine the profile of the respondents. Majority of the respondents were classified to have mild hypertension. The average age of the hypertensive respondents were within the range of 36 — 40 years. Majority of the respondents were elementary graduates. The capital monthly income of the respondents ranged from Php 1,000 — 5,000, which is within the minimum wage level. Majority of the male respondents have a bigger abdominal girth range of 29 — 31 inches than female respondents. The prefer exercise of the respondents was walking. Majority of the respondents prefer to sleep about six to seven hours. Majority of the respondents were smokers on the other hand majority of them were not alcoholic drinkers.
Results showed that hypertension is not associated to age, sex, abdominal girth, body mass index, educational attainment, monthly income, smoking, alcohol drinking, life style, exercise, and hours of sleep. However, history of hypertension and food intake such as salty foods, and cholesterol foods were found to be significantly associated with hypertension
