A three-month field study was conducted at Amalgamated Specialties Corporation in Km. 21 South Superhighway, Muntinlupa City to provide the trainee with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills gained in the classroom to actual business operations. Specifically, it aimed to describe the organization and management practices of the firm; identify the marketing activities; determine the problems faced by the various departments and recommend feasible solutions to the problems. Information with regards to operations, problems and plans of the firm, marketing and sales were obtained through observations and interviews with the managers and staff of the firm. Other information, such as history, products offered by the firm, human resource management practices, policies and procedures, compensation and benefits, were gathered from the office records, manuals, files, and official website of the company (www. am special. com).
Amalgamated Specialties Corporation was established in 1963 and has grown into one of the pioneers in the school and office supply industry, particularly in the local production and marketing of Mongol pencils and Crayola crayons. The company products are advertised regularly on television, radio, newspapers and magazines.
Employees strictly observed the eight hour work schedule regardless of shift. There was a strict implementation of the policies and procedures in the company making it one of the dominant players in the industry. The firm encountered problems on inconsistency of the customers in paying their fees, delayed and incomplete deliveries of items and product returns by the customers. The author gained valuable and memorable experiences, from the firm that can be used for her future employment. Having a training in AMSPEC gave her a chance and opportunities as guide to be exposed in actual business environment.
The student also gained self-confidence in handling and dealing with customers and providing solutions when problems arise. In addition, to be a productive trainee, creating a good relationship with the co-employees must be borne in mind.
