CUENCA, MARISH O. and RUIZ, ERYCKA JEAN T. Soil Characterization and Land use in Cafias River Watershed, Cavite, Philippines. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2017. Adviser: For. Junser P. Magpantay.

The study was conducted from February 2016 - January 2017 covering 20 purposive barangays located within the seven municipalities and cities: Tagaytay City, Amadeo, Indang, Trece Martires City, General Trias City, Tanza and Rosario to characterize the soil and to determine the existing land use of Cafias River Watershed (CRW).

Results indicated that the soil types in CRW were Guadalupe Clay, Guadalupe Clay Loam, Magallanes Clay Loam, Magallanes Clay Loam (Steep Phase), Magallanes Loam, Tagaytay Loam, Tagaytay Loam (Steep Phase), and Tagaytay Sandy Loam. The collected soil samples have the soil pH of the watershed ranging from 3.9-6.4 (extremely to slightly acidic). Organic Matter (OM) ranging from 2.27-6.93 percent, total Nitrogen (N) ranging from 0.17-0.33 percent. Available Phosphorus (P) varied from 17-347 ppm and exchangeable Potassium (K) ranged from 0.48-2.72 me/] 00g of soil. In terms of soil bulk density, values ranging from 1.1-1.48 g/cm? which resulted to slow to moderately slow permeable with pore space volume equivalent from 41.51 percent to 55.82 percent, soil moisture content ranges from 6.60 to 18.05 percent. Soil texture varied from loam, silt loam and sandy loam. Geographical Information System (GIS) was employed to generate maps showing the geomorphological characteristics of CRW. It has slope of 0 - 88, elevation of 0 - 713,
land forms and drainage patterns/river systems including the existing land use of the
watershed. Results revealed that the watershed has the following land-uses, agriculture, built-up forest, grassland and water bodies.

On the other hand, CRW are capable of growing coffee, pineapple, banana, mango, kaong, nangka, and coconut in upland portion. In central hilly, dalandan, duhat, guyabano, kamoteng kahoy, papaya, santol, coconut and banana are capable of growing in the area.

In lowland portion, avocado, caimito, nangka, papaya, santol, mais, mango, guava and coconut are capable of growing in the area.
