The study was conducted from November 2015 to March 2017 at Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite to design and construct a piezoelectric floor mat kinetic energy harvester. Specifically, it aimed to 1. design and construct the circuitry of the piezoelectric floor mat and charging station; 2. develop a program that will control the system; 3. construct the casing of the floor mat and charging station; 4. test and evaluate the system through pilot testing; and 5. conduct a cost computation of the design project.
The design project was composed of a flywheel mechanism to keep mechanical stress on the piezoelectric transducer which converts mechanical energy to electrical energy, full-bridge rectifier that converts AC voltage to DC voltage, a DC battery for storage, an inverter to increase the value of the voltage, a coin slot mechanism to accept coins and sense if the coins are genuine or not, a PIC microcontroller circuit to program the timer of the coin slot mechanism, and an LED to indicate charging status.
The design project was evaluated at the Engineering Science building. It was proven that the system was able to harvest kinetic energy and process the harvested energy to become electrical energy which can power a charging station.
