CRUZ, ALMA CATISAG. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. "ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ESSENTIAL OIL FROM LEAVES OF KALACHUCHE (Plumiera acutifolia Pior)." Thesis Adviser: Prof. Trinidad M. Ocampo

The study was conducted at Chemical and Mineral Division, DOST, Taguig, Metro Manila from January to February 1999 to extract essential oil from leaves of Kalachuche, determine the physical and chemical properties of the oil and characterize the chemical constituent of the essential oil extracted.
Hydro distillation of the fresh leaves of Plumiera acutifolia Pior gave a 0.07% yield of essential oils. Essential oils were then characterized for physic-chemical properties using the methods described by Guenther, 1949. Kalachuche oil was brownish in color, lighter than water and had a pungent odor. It is a clear, mobile liquid.
From the physical and chemical analysis of Kalachuche oil, the following results were obtained: Specific gravity, 0.905; refractive index, 1.513 at 20 C; acid value, 6.42, saponification number, 73.49; and ester value, 67.07.
Thin layer chromatography analysis of the oil showed the possible presence of methyl heptanone or citronellal, terpineol and linalool.
