FESTIN, NELSON B. April 1999. Cavite State University. "ISOLATION
AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ESSENTIAL OIL FROM (Ocimum basilicum Linn.) LEAVES" Adviser: Mr. Emil L. Escalante.
This study entitled "Isolation and Characterization of Essential Oil from Balanoi (Ocimum basilicum Linn) Leaves," was conducted at the Industrial Technology and Development Institute (ITDI), Bicutan, Taguig and at the Physical Science Instrumental Room, Physical Science Department, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from February I to 23, 1999.
This study was conducted to isolate the essential oil from the balanoi leaves, characterize the isolated essential oil, determine the percentage yields of isolated essential oil from balanoi leaves and cite some possible uses of the isolated essential oil from balanoi leaves as compared to the R-value of some standard essential oils.
A total of 2.3 kg of fresh balanoi leaves was used in the experiment. Extraction of the essential was done using the hydro distillation method. This method was used for oil both heavier and lighter than water. Distillation was done eight hours or until the plant material had exhausted its constituents.
The physic-chemical characterization of Balanoi oil gave the following results:
specific gravity, 0.8892, acid value, 4.60, ester value, 28.78, saponification value, 33.38 and solubility at 80 percent ethanol, 1 vol. in 10 vol.

Two dimensional thin-layer chromatography (TLC) showed that linalool or phellandrene, eugenol, citral or methyl heptanone and citronellal are the major components of the essential oils.
The product obtained was then analyzed to its percentage yield. The percentage yield of the oil was 0.25%
