The main objective of the study was to determine in the effects of sports participation in the personality traits of selected student-athletes in Cavite State University. Specifically, the study aimed to: 1) describe the demographic characteristics of student-athlete in terms of age, sex, playing years, year level and sports event; 2) know the effects of sports participation in their personality traits according to the Five Factor Model in terms of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism; 3) know if there is a significant difference between the effects of sports participation in their personality traits according to the Five Factor Model; and 4) know if there is a significant relationship between the effects of sports participation in personality traits of student-athlete and demographic characteristics. The study was conducted at Cavite State University- Main Campus, Indang, Cavite. Participants were student-athletes of the university. These participants were determined by the official list of athletes from the Office of the Sports director who are competing to the University Games. The instruments used were a survey questionnaire which was composed of three parts: cover letter, profile and the questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into: demographic profile and the five factor model format questions. The questionnaires were given to the student-athletes during their vacant time. All the gathered data were checked, tabulated, interpreted and subjugated to statistical treatment.
The statistical tools used in the study were the frequency/ percentage method, weighted mean, analysis of variance and Chi square test of association. In this study the relationship between the effects of sports participation in personality traits of student-athletes and demographic characteristics. Results showed the chi-square test of association done to test the relationship of the effects of sports participation with demographic characteristics, age, sex, events played, and the number of playing years are found to be significantly related to the participants perceived effects of sports participation on their personality traits. Likewise, the significant relationship, the affected personality traits in terms of the Five Factor Model due to the sports participation, significant relationship were obtained. This also means that participating in sports affects the personality traits. It is recommended that the information may add to the literature and references of the future researchers, and they could somehow cover some or most limitations listed in this study to improve this research. Future studies could investigate if the findings of this thesis will hold true and consistent over time. The findings of this study yielded information that could help students-athletes and coaches in terms of knowing how to improve their personalities.
