DEL ROSARIO, Nathan Jed L. and ISAGUIRRE, Joshua T., Design and Development of a Microcontroller-Based Brewed Coffee Vendo Machine. Undergraduate Design Project, Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. March 2011, Adviser: Marivic G. Dizon.
The Brewed Coffee Vendo Machine was designed and developed at Brgy. San Agustin, Martirez City Cavite from November 2010 to January 2011. The macine was tested and evaluated at the College of Engineering and Information Technology, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from February 1 to February 10, 2011. Generally, the study focused on the design and development of a microcontroller-based brewed coffee vending machine. Specifically, it aimed to integrate coffee brewing, vending and dispensing into one machine; development of software that will control the system; evaluate the machine in terms of the brewing time, volume of dispensed brewed coffee and volume of dispensed water, and functionality and aesthetics through the use of an evaluation sheet; and conduct a cost computation of the machine. The design was inspired on the idea of constructing a brewed coffee vendo machine because it does not exist yet here on our country the Philippines. The brewed coffee vendo machine was capable to he inserted of one (1) peso and five (5) peso coins, to dispensed water from the coffee maker and a pouch of brewed coffee into the coffee dripper; and to dumped off the used coffee pouches from the coffee maker's dripper after the brewing process. The price of each cup of coffee could be reprogrammed any time with the aid of the keypad and LCD. The machine also has a buzzer and notification on the LCD in cases that there are no pouches left in the machine. The design project was basically composed of two major parts namely: software and hardware part. The Microcode Studio Picbasic Pro was used to develop the software. The software was used for programming the microcontroller for the integration of the whole functions of the machine namely dispensing, brewing, dumping, price changing, and machine reset. The hardware was composed of a coffee maker, D.C. geared motors, LCD, coin slots, and a microcontroller for the automation of the vending machine. After all the data were gathered, it was observed that the brewed coffee vending machine requires less effort and time for the users. The total cost of the machine, materials and labor was P81,121.00. After evaluating the performance and functionality of the machine, it is recommended to include a mini exhaust fan to avoid moisture formation inside the machine; two sensors, one for the water dispenser unit to control the water level and another sensor at the coffee maker to monitor the presence of cup on the coffee maker before the brewing process starts. Using of stainless materials for safety, a lock for the cup holder and adjustable capacitive sensor placement for volume of water control.
