FALLORE, GLADYS O., "Perception and Academic Performance on the Use of Multi-media of the Students at Cavite State University — Rosario for the School Year 2012-2013". Master's Thesis. Master of Arts in Education major in Mathematics. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. April 2014. Adviser: Prof. Antonio V. Cinto.
The main purpose of this study was to determine the perception on the use of multi- media and academic performance in Analytic Geometry of Associate Computer Technology students of Cavite State University — Rosario. It also determined the differences among the students' profile, academic capacity, perception on the use of multimedia, and academic performance in Analytic Geometry.
The pretest — posttest design was used in this study to describe the differences and relationships among variables. While, descriptive —correlational method was used to describe the sample under investigation. The participants Of the Study were 64 students 01 Associate in Computer Technology course. Collection of data was done using students' survey questionnaire and self-made test. In analyzing the data, different statistical tools were used such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, I-test for independent samples, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis one way ANOVA, Wilcoxon signed rank, test for dependent samples, Spearman rank, and Pearson r.
Majority of the students were female, graduated from public high school, and belonged to family with low income. The most available multi-media at home was computer. In terms of academic capacity, majority of the participants had average IQ, had low performance in the entrance examination, and had fair grade in College Algebra. The perception of the students on the use of multi-media was very good before the treatment,
and excellent after the treatment. The academic performance in Analytic Geometry of the students was poor both in the pretest and posttest. But mean score in the post test was higher than on the Pretest.
Significant differences were found in the grade in College Algebra when grouped according to the type of school students' graduated in secondary; students' perception on the use of multi-media when grouped according to sex after the intervention of multimedia in teaching; academic performance in Analytic Geometry when grouped according to sex before the treatment and type of school; the students' perception on the use of multi-media before and after the treatment; and the students' academic performance in
Analytic Geometry before and after the treatment
Significant relationships occurred between the students' perception on the use of multi-media before the treatment and academic performance in Analytic Geometry on the posttest, and between the students' academic performance in Analytic Geometry and academic capacity after the treatment.
Based on the results of the study, the students may further use the available multimedia at home in studying Mathematics to determine its effect on their academic performance. Mathematics teachers are also encouraged to enhance their awareness of variety of multi-media by attending seminars. The administrators' support is also needed for the availability of multi-media devices in the classroom. The parents are also encouraged to guide their children on the proper use of the available multi-media devices at home. Curriculum makers may develop learning materials that would include the integration of the use multi-media. Future researchers may conduct similar studies that will relate the use of multi-media in teaching to other methods of teaching.
