LAYSA, MARY ROSE CARMEN E. Population Fluctuation of Arthropods at Different Growth Stages of Corn (Zea maize) Intercropped with Bush Sitao (Vigna sesquipedalis). Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Crop Protection-Entomology. Cavite State University Indang, Cavite. April 2003. Adviser: Dr. Arnulfo C. Pascual.

The experiment was conducted at Barangay Kalubkob, Sling, Cavite from October to December 2002. It aimed to collect and identify the arthropods at different growth stages of corn and bush sitao in monocultures and in corn + bush sitao in intercropping system and to differentiate the population fluctuation of arthropods in monocultures and in intercropped conditions. Seven species of insect pests were identified as pests of corn. These were corn seedling maggot, shorthorned grasshopper, corn borer, corn planthopper, corn aphid corn semi-looper and corn earworm. Of all these insect pests corn semi-looper and corn earworm were present only in monocropping patterns. On the other hand, there were five insect pests that were identified as pests of bush sitao. These were the bean aphid, squash beetle, green jassid, bean fly and fire ants. Moreover, six insects were identified as natural enemies as associated with corn. These were four-spotted ladybeetle, praying mantis, jumping spider, and syrphid fly, fire ants and chalcid wasps. These were the same natural enemies found in bush sitao except for chalcid wasps and fire ant.
