Abstract: LEGARDA, KESIAH CES S. and PEREZ, ARIANNE M. Lived Experiences of Street Children in GMA, Cavite: Basis for Social Work Intervention. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Social Work. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2018. Adviser: Dr. Rosylyn M. Amigo. This study was conducted at the Municipality of General Mariano Alvarez (GMA), Cavite from December 2017 to May 2018. This study aimed to make an in-depth analysis on the experiences of street children as basis for social work intervention. Specifically, it aimed to determine the demographic profile of street children; identify the reasons why street children are on the street; identify the problems of street children in terms of: social problems, physical problems, psychological/mental problems, determine the coping strategy of street children in dealing with their problem/s, identify the needs that are probably most important in the eyes of the street child or so called 'felt needs', and determine hopes and aspirations of street children and identify suggested developmental programs suitable to their needs. The research was a qualitative study. Data gathered was obtained from the street children of GMA, Cavite. Thematic research design was used in this study and the non-probability method was utilized in determining the total participant of the study. There were ten participants in this study. Three (3) classified as children of the street and seven (7) as children on the street. There were eight (8) males and two (2) female street children. The age bracket of seven street children were from 13-17 years old while the three street children belong to 10-12 years old. The reasons that brought the children in the street were determined as to be with their friends, to do own decisions, and influenced by other people. Problems were also determined where social problems influenced by other people. Problems were also determined where social problems include violent environment, illiteracy or lack of knowledge, discrimination and lack of accessible resources. Children have also experienced common diseases, lack of adequate nutrition, and engagement to sexual activities which leads to physical problem. The Stresses that street children experience made them vulnerable to emotional problem. Children survived through their personal strengths, peer group and other support mechanism such as community. Most of the street children wanted to pursue and finish their studies; they view education as a key to success. Street children aspired to become professionals in the future to help not only their family but other people as well. Associated with these perspectives, the children have suggested some programs that they thought would help them with their present condition. Most of them were asking for educational program while for the elder street children they wanted to help in finding a job and to get into livelihood training. After determining the reasons that brought the street children in the street, a suggested social work intervention plan was proposed to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of GMA, Cavite that may help them address the never-ending issues and concern about street children.
