Abstract: AURELLANO, LOVELY P., GRAHLON, CHRISTIAN DAVE M., MOJIICA, GAZEL GRACE D., VELANDO, RADNNY M. Development of An Ergonomically Designed Coconut Meat Grater And Milk Extractor. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Engr. Gerry M. Castillo. Global demand for coconut and coconut products has increased considerably in recent years and it is expected to continue in tune with the growth in world population. In relation to this, both the coconut meat grater and milk extractor are used to reduce the time caused by performing the process manually. The more meat and milk produced in relatively shorter time, the higher is the efficiency of the whole process. Thus to increase the efficiency of, mechanization is introduced (Collado et. al, 2017). In this study, the researchers developed an ergonomically designed coconut meat grater and coconut milk extractor. The development of the machine was conducted with the consideration of Ergonomics. Define, Measure, Analyze, Design and Verify (DMADV) method was used to guide the whole development process. During the Define phase, it was determined that the main problem with the existing coconut meat grater and milk extractor is that it requires high labor and energy. The Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) worksheet was used to determine if the postures of operators while using the machine is acceptable. Results was discussed in the Measure phase along with the different anthropometric measurements. In the Analyze phase, a tree diagram was developed to map out the task necessary to develop the machine. Fishbone diagram was also used to determine the causes of the problem. Also in this phase, user requirements was evaluated and additional features needed were determined. On the other hand, 5th and 95th percentile of the collected anthropometric data were computed and used in the determination of the machine dimension. Results were revealed at Design phase along with machine design and flowchart showed how the machine operates. Lastly, in the verify phase, performance of the machine was evaluated as well as the satisfaction of the user. It shows that the developed machine has advantages in terms of efficiency and capacity as compared to the presently available machines. It can therefore be concluded that the ergonomically designed coconut meat grater and milk extractor is recommendable. The price is higher than what is presently available but considering the features it has, investment is still worth it.
