Abstract: PEJANA, AHMAN JOHN P. Design, Development and Evaluation of a Laboratory Type Solar-Powered Desalinization Plant. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Engineering. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. May 2018. Adviser: Dr. David L. Cero. This study was conducted at College of Engineering and Information Technology, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite from January to April 2018. The main objective of the study was to design, develop and evaluate a laboratory type solar-powered desalinization plant. Specifically, this study aimed to design and develop a laboratory type solar-powered desalinization plant; evaluate the fabricated desalinization plant in terms of duration of desalinization, desalinating efficiency and desalinated water quality; and conduct a cost analysis of the fabricated machine. The principal components of the machine are photovoltaic module, fluid treatment device, heater plate, inverter, batteries, charge controller, and air-cooled and water-cooled condensers. The machine was designed considering the cost and availability of materials, power requirement of the heating element and ease of operation. The laboratory type solar-powered desalinization plant was used to convert saltwater into freshwater suitable for irrigation. The results of the study showed that the duration of desalinization varies over time and temperature. The desalinating efficiency has no considerable difference over time and among treatments. Meanwhile, the desalinated water has a concentration of 2 to 3 ppt of dissolved salts which is fresh water. The total cost and annual fixed cost of the machine is Php 31,041.50 and Php 9,002.03 respectively.
