Abstract: MALABANAN, CHRISTIAN RUTH M. Occurrence of Cyanobacteria in Selected Rivers of Indang, Cavite. Undergraduate thesis. Bachelor of Science in Biology. Department of Biological Science, Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite, April 2007. Adviser, Ms. Sherine M. Cruzate. Five Rivers in Indang, Cavite were characterized and analyzed for the presence of cyanobacteria in a three month period. These rivers included Prinsa, Shanung, Tangke, Lejos and Kaytapos. Physical characterization revealed that the temperature of the river water ranged from 21 to 25 °C. Tangke River was the only one with a pH of 7. Prinsa was the deepest being 4.2 to 5.6 ft. Based on nutrient analysis, Prinsa had the lowest nitrogen content (1.81 mg/L) while Shanung River contained the highest nitrogen (5.9 mg/L). In terms of the phosphate concentration, all rivers exceeded the standard (0.4 mg/L) with the highest observed in Shanung River (0.72 mg/L). Seven groups of cyanobacteria found in the rivers were identified based on their morphological characteristics: Lyngbya, Anabaena, Oscillatoria, Microcystis, Chroococcus, Nostoc, Gleotrichia. Two however, remained unidentified. Majority of this cyanobacteria were found in Shanung River. This may be attributed to the nutrient content of this river which highly supports the growth of these organisms.
