The study was conducted in one city and three selected municipalities in Cavite. These four areas have the highest rice production in the province. The survey was conducted from June to July, 2014 The productivity of lowland rice-based farming systems in the City of Imus and Municipalities of Naic, General Trias and Tanza, Cavite was assessed. Secondary data were gathered from the offices of the Provincial Agriculturist and City/Municipal Agriculturist of Imus, Naic, General Trias and Tanza. Three hundred seventy-seven farmers were interviewed as study participants. Socio-economic factors such as age, education, affiliation to rural-based organizations, farming experience, education, and gender have a significant contribution in the productivity of lowland rice-based farming system. Most of the participants were tenants. Mono-cropping was being practiced by the majority of farmers/participants. Land availability, high cost of labor and inputs, natural calamities, pests and diseases, and soil fertility were the common problems affecting the level of productivity of lowland rice-based farming systems and the income of the farmers. The level of rice production did not meet the food requirements of the province of Cavite. Majority of the farmers/participants borrowed money for production, household consumption, and other purposes. The post-production operations were limited to harvesting and threshing activities. Rice and other commodities were sold on-farm. Improper production and post-harvest practices also lead to low level of productivity. These factors generally affected the rice production and income of the farmers in lowland rice-based farming system in the selected areas of Cavite.
