Abstract: GUEVARRA, RONA MAE B. Survey on Medicinal and Edible Ferns and Their Antioxidant and Cytotoxic Activities in District 8 of Cavite. Undergraduate Thesis. Bachelor of Science in Biology, Major in General Biology. College of Arts and Sciences. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. June 2019. Adviser: Prof. Arvie Grace B. Masibag. Ferns are part of the plant community throughout the tropics. As of 2012, around 1100 species under 144 genera and 39 families of Pteridophytes or ferns have been reported to be present in the Philippines. One of the poorly studied group of plants is the ferns particularly their medicinal uses. The study aimed to identify the different fern species available in three municipalities of District 8 of Cavite; determine the phytochemical properties of these ferns; determine the cytotoxic activities of fern leaf extract using BSLA and Allium cepa test; determine the antioxidant properties of ferns; and verify the use of ferns based on survey and laboratory tests. Survey and collection of fern sample were done in the municipalities of Alfonso, General Emilio Aguinaldo and Magallanes. After which, ethanolic and aqueous extraction were performed. Then, phytochemical, cytotoxic and antioxidant analysis were performed to the collected fern samples. The results obtained from laboratory tests and survey were verified for their medicinal uses. Of the five ferns examined, A. esculentum leaves appeared to be the most promising source of cytotoxic compounds. A. esculentum gave the highest E Cso and LCx5 values for Allium cepa test and BSLA, respectively. P. calomelanos was the most promising source of antioxidant compounds having the lowest 1C,, value, followed by A. nidus, D. quercifolia and A. esculentum. A. esculentum, D. quercifolia, P. calomelanos and A. nidus leaves extract showed potent activity. The present study indicated that the leaves extract of A. esculentum, D. quercifolia, P. calomelanos and A. nidus have profound cytotoxic and antioxidant effect and may have potential use in medicine.
