Abstract: SISANTE, BERNADETTE A. Organic Production of Herbs and Spices at Old Kano's Farm. Farm Practice Report. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture major in Horticulture. Cavite State University, Indang Cavite. April 2009. Adviser. Dr. Adolfo Manuel Jr. A farm practice project entitled "Organic Production of Selected Herbs and Spices at Old Kano's Farm" was conducted from November 17, 2008 to January 30, 2009, at Old Kano's Farm, Lalaan II, Silang Cavite. This project aimed to gain experience and practical skills in handling herbs and spices and acquire additional knowledge in organic production of herbs and spices through actual exposure. During the farm practice, the student was oriented and given the chance to experience and develop practical skills in handling herbs and spices plants. Hands-on activities she performed include: media and plot preparation, planting/transplanting, and preparing cuttings for planting, watering and weeding, compost and manure application, control of pest and diseases, harvesting, sorting and packing. In media preparation, the proper mixture of soil, coconut coir dust and compost, at the rate of 1:1:1 was strictly observed. Planting and transplanting are the main activities in the farm, because the farm is producing several types of herbs and spices through organic farming. Such activities includes: propagating rosemary through cuttings, while basil, arugula, and thyme are propagated by seeds, and tarragon is propagated through separation or dividing of roots. Compost and cow manure are applied once week before planting and two weeks after transplanting. Dishwashing soap solution is sprayed every two weeks to prevent the spread of pest and diseases. Pruning and removing the infested plant parts is also done to control pest and diseases. The farm sells herbs and spices plant to hotels and restaurants by orders although a lot of clients drop by personally to buy herbs and spices. The farm practice experience at the Old Kano's Farm provided the student with relevant skills in organic production of herbs and spices. It significantly prepared her for future employment in the same venture.
