Summary: "The European Union (EU) is a unique partnership in which member states have pooled sovereignty in certain policy areas and harmonized laws on a wide range of economic, social, and political issues. The EU is the latest stage in a process of European integration begun after World War II, initially by six Western European countries, to pro mote peace, security, and economic development. Today, the EU is composed of 28 member states, including most of the formerly communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The EU is largely viewed as a success story and as a cornerstone of European stability and prosperity. Currently, however, the EU faces a range of political and economic pressures, including slow growth and persistently high unemployment in many EU countries, as well as the rise of populist political parties, at least some of which harbor anti - EU or “Eurosceptic” sentiments (as well as anti - immigrant views). Such factors are complicating the EU’s ability to deal with a multitude of internal and external challenges. The industries are the main contributors of pollution of natural resources in Europe. The European nations also have also set some strict guidelines, rules/regulations that are required for controlling pollution, and also for maintaining the natural balance. Regarding environmental risks to health, there have been marked improvements in the quality of drinking water and bathing water in recent decades and some hazardous pollutants have been reduced. However, air pollution and noise cause serious health impacts, particularly in urban areas. In 2011, about 430 000 premature deaths in the EU-28 were attributed to fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Exposure to environmental noise has been estimated to contribute to at least 10,000 cases of premature deaths due to coronary heart disease and stroke each year. Rates of endocrine diseases and disorders have also increased in line with more widespread use of chemicals. Looking ahead, the outlook for environmental health risks in coming decades is uncertain. Projected improvements in air quality are not expected to be sufficient to prevent continued harm to health and the environment. Moreover, health impacts resulting from climate change are likely to get worse. This Book takes a look of the institutions of the EU, its legislative process, and the nature of European law as it affects free movement of the goods, people, and services that affect health or are necessary to deliver health care. From its origins as six western European countries coming together to reduce trade barriers, the European Union (EU) has expanded, both geographically and in the scope of its actions, to become an important supranational body whose policies affect almost all aspects of the lives of its citizens. This influence extends to health and health services. The EU’s formal responsibilities in health and health service are limited in scope, but it has substantial indirect influences on them."--Back cover
