Abstract: CORNESIO, DAN CARLO S.J. and PEREY, ANDREI JACOB R. Development of a Single Turbocharger instructional Trainer. Undergraduate Design Project. Bachelor of Industrial Technology major in Automotive Technology. Cavite State University, Indang, Cavite. Adviser: Prof. Danielito R. Escano. Turbocharger is a type of forced induction system. It compresses the air flowing into the engine for a description of airflow in a normal engine. The objective of the study is to construct and develop a single turbocharger instructional trainer because modern training equipment is required to help the students in gaining knowledge and to understand more about turbocharged vehicle. The design project was constructed using mainly of angular bar which served as the major frame of the turbocharger instructional trainer. The authors used an angular bar and tubular bar which has a size of 1"x1"xl/2" for the whole frame since the components was not heavy at all. The measurement for the frame was 75cm x 75cm x 1 00 cm. The authors also decided to make a mounting for the turbocharger and the aspirator blower to lessen the movement when it is operational, also proper mounting for the reservoirs are made and lastly a holder for the two hydraulic pumps was provided. The mounting of the turbocharger, aspirator blower and reservoirs are fully welded on every joints of it and screwed on the top platform of the frame. The turbocharger was secured by 3 pairs of nuts that hold its grip on its mounting also to support the mounting stability 4 pairs of bolts and nuts have been used. Being space-saver and light weight the instructional trainer can be moved by the instructor or the students to their desired position inside the automotive laboratory of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology. The lower platform of the instructional trainer was covered with acrylic glass that was riveted on the tubular and angular bar. Based from the observation during evaluation and testing, when the power of the aspirator blower and hydraulic pumps was turned on the single turbocharger instructional trainer starts its mechanism. The aspirator provided the air to the turbine housing and the turbocharger mechanism operated, while the turbine compressor also rotates through the aspirated air delivered by the blower including the flow of the coolant and lubricant as well. The reservoir of coolant and lubricant has a clear hose so that flow of coolant and lubricant can be seen clearly by the students. The rotation of the coolant and lubricant was sustainably provided by the hydraulic pump attached from the lower reservoir to upper one so the flow of coolant and lubricant rotates at the turbocharger coolant and lubricant passages and vice versa. The performance of the machine was tested and evaluated and was proven effective to show the components through the exploded parts below the trainer and also the principles of operation was clearly demonstrates on the provided components. The instructors evaluated the overall design project and managed to answer the objectives which were considered effective in providing the necessary skills and knowledge about turbocharger. The instructional trainer was evaluated by selected Automotive Technology students and instructors wherein the result of evaluation was 4.6 with the degree of level outstanding. It was considered a significant result as a finale of the design project.
